Perplexity AI works differently from a classic search engine. Instead of returning ten blue links, it searches the web in real time, reads a handful of sources, and writes one synthesised answer with numbered citations. For brands, the question is no longer "do we rank?" but "are we one of the sources it cites — and does it describe us correctly?"
That is the work of Generative Engine Optimization (GEO). This guide covers what matters specifically for Perplexity.
How Perplexity picks its sources
Every answer is built from pages Perplexity can retrieve and read quickly. In practice, the sources it favours tend to share a few traits:
- They answer the question directly. A clear, specific answer near the top of the page is easier to quote than a long introduction.
- They are crawlable and current. Pages that load fast, render without heavy client-side scripts, and show visible dates are easier to retrieve and trust.
- They are corroborated. When several independent sources say the same thing about a brand, that claim is more likely to appear in the answer.
1. Audit what Perplexity says about you today
Start by asking Perplexity the questions your buyers ask: "best [category] tools", "[your brand] vs [competitor]", "is [your brand] legit?". Record which brands are named, which sources are cited, and where descriptions of you are wrong or missing. This is your baseline.
2. Make your own pages quotable
- Put a one or two sentence answer at the top of key pages.
- Use descriptive headings that mirror real questions.
- State facts plainly — what you do, who it's for, where you operate.
- Add structured data (Organization, Product, Article) so your entity is unambiguous.
- Make sure
robots.txtdoesn't block AI crawlers you want to be read by.
3. Strengthen your entity footprint off-site
Perplexity leans heavily on third-party sources: reviews, comparisons, community discussions, press and directories. Keep your brand name, description and category consistent everywhere it appears, and fix outdated profiles. Inconsistent descriptions produce inconsistent answers.
4. Earn credible citations
Being mentioned by sources Perplexity already cites in your category matters more than volume. Useful levers include expert commentary in trade media, original research or data others reference, and genuine presence in communities where your buyers ask questions.
5. Monitor and iterate
AI answers shift as sources change. Re-run your prompt set regularly, track whether you're named and cited, and trace any inaccurate claim back to the source that's feeding it — then fix that source.
Where to start
If you only do three things this quarter: audit your prompts, rewrite your top pages to answer questions directly, and clean up your brand descriptions across third-party profiles.
